Fans of Failure, the Deftones and other rock groups who specialize in monolithic clabs of noise should take note of the fine debut from this Kansas City, Mo., quartet, whose core members come from well-respected, now-defunct K.C. rock group Molly McGuire. Gunfighter basically picks up where MM left off: The songs on the band's debut teeter between silence and ferocity, with passages of pretty minor notes always on the tail of shredding major chords. Songwriter/singer Jason Blackmore's lyrics are tongue-in-cheek, and he always has a sense of melody on his mind. It's not just no-brainer noise, in other words; it's much smarter than that.
